The trusty dishwasher is one household appliance we often overlook until it breaks down. It saves us countless hours, conveniently hides the messy aftermath of a hearty meal, and spares us the dreaded dishpan hands.
But how often do we consider its design or functionality? For most of us, it's a simple routine: shut the door, hit start, and see you in a few hours. But did you know there are optimal ways to load it, or that unique dishwasher accessories could elevate your dishwashing game?
Loading Your Dishwasher Like a Pro
Cups and glasses should ideally go on the left and right side of the top tray. Secure lightweight containers against something more substantial to prevent them from flipping and collecting water. Here's a hidden gem: most dishwashers come with a glass holder for those fancy long-stemmed glasses. This holder, when not in use, remains inconspicuously upright. But if deployed, it provides a snug spot for your wine or champagne glasses. If your dishwasher has foldable pin rows, adjust them as needed for larger dishes or pots. Some trays even come out altogether to accommodate bulky items. Also, always load similar items together and point everything toward the center, where the jet spray originates.
Before Washing: Tips to Remember
My dishwasher recently had a hiccup. The culprit? Plates loaded with too much leftover food. While it might sound absurd, ensuring you scrape off food remains (and sometimes even pre-rinsing) can significantly enhance the longevity and efficiency of your dishwasher. Remember, for newer models, you might only need to scrape. But for older ones, a good scrape followed by a rinse is the golden rule.
Dishwasher Programs: Which One Should You Use?
Your dishwasher's programs largely depend on its make and model. However, most come with a few standard settings:
- Pre-rinse: A short rinse cycle without detergent, acting as a manual pre-rinse.
- Glass/Quick clean: A high-temp, quick wash mainly for glasses and mugs, using only the top spray arm.
- Heavy: This is meant for sturdy pots and pans, with longer cycles at the maximum heat.
- Normal/Regular: The most commonly used program balances time and thoroughness.
Maintain It Right
Once a month, run your empty dishwasher on a regular setting with some vinegar. This helps remove any potential build-up that might cause blockages later. Also, consider halving your dishwashing tabs. Despite what brands might suggest, half a tab usually suffices, ensuring less residue and saving you money. And if you're considering a new dishwasher or replacing an old one, explore our extensive range of built in dishwashers, freestanding dishwashers, and dishwasher accessories.
